Hello, Global Villagers!

I’m very proud to share this new Guardian/Big Ideas podcast that radio maverick Benjamen Walker produced — just in time for the 100th anniversary of Marshall McLuhan’s birth.

I consider myself a huge fan and disciple of McLuhan; discovering by happy accident his Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, at age 19, set in motion the perceptual tremors whose reverberations shook up forever my entire view of the world, as well as shifting the very course of my life.

So it’s with a mix of excitement and humility that I can say I was lucky enough to be able to contribute a little piece of music to the podcast: my track Asymmetry provides the rhythmic ground for the philosophical figures in the second half of the show.

Oh, look. Once again science has outdone itself with groundbreaking new research that finally affirms, three centuries after the fact, what philosophy has known since Spinoza - that mnemonic proximity is a function of duration and not of spacing. In other words, memories aren’t associated through the similarity of their ideatum - all our thoughts about “animals” in one place, all our thoughts about “plants” in another - but rather through their closeness in time.

In fact, the concept of memory that this article presents is virtually identical with the one put forth by Henri Bergson in Matter and Memory (1896). For Bergson, memory is a function of two factors: utility and capacity. Memory is, in effect, not so much an image as a particular duration of time, ranging from instantaneous to infinite, which contains within it a particular sequence of actions or affections and serving as a kind of “guide” for future action.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development is the longest prospective study of mental and physical well-being ever conducted. I’ve taken 10 representative case studies and visualized their salient character traits, personal timeline, social supports, and physical health to draw conclusions about “the happy life.”
